Climate change is the result of colonialism

Climate change is the end result of a process in which one group of people steals another group’s natural resources, consumes them, and turns them into waste and pollution. This process is called colonialism. To stop climate change, we need to stop colonialism.

Colonialism, I think, involves three big groups of people. To stop it, we need all three. First, there are the people who have the natural resources: indigenous people, and their descendants. Second, there’s the group that’s forced to extract and processs these resources: enslaved people, and their descendants. Third, there’s the group that steals these resources: colonizers, and their descendants.

The relationships between these three groups seem fixed, but maybe they’re not. The universe makes itself anew every day, and we along with it. A multiracial group acting explicitly to end colonialism would be a powerful thing. Powerful enough to end climate change.
